what is that? Invertebrates of southern california

The types of animals that are popularly represented in books and media limit our perspective of what amazing common animals there are to observe. The group of animals that are severely forgotten are the invertebrates: animals that don’t have backbones (really no internal bones at all). Yet, they make up a majority of the biodiversity on earth. Animals don't have to look like what we think animals should look like. They can look like plants, like jelly blobs, and mostly like aliens because we are so unfamiliar with them. My illustrated book highlights the invertebrates that I see while scuba diving in southern california and encourages readers to expand their perception of what animals or living organisms in general, can look like.

Mindfulness Through lichens

By introspecting on my relationship with lichens, I have gained a better sense of myself in relation to the rest of the world, not only in human society, but in nature. I want to share my experiences through illustrations and story, illuminating the amazing ecosystem services lichens provide and how they have shaped our planet, like invisible superheros. If we stop and become conscious of these creatures, and others that live amongst and interact with micro-worlds that are easily overlooked, we can have a better appreciation for living on earth, with nature, and experience more mindful moments.
